NYAPLAP was founded in October 2019 to bring together people in the New York City metropolitan area who are involved in preparing students for law school: pre-law advisors, law school admissions officials, people who prepare students for standardized tests (and those who offer them), professors who teach legal subjects to undergraduates, and others who assist students in applying to law school. Since many of these people are not formally pre-law advisors, it seems more accurate to call this organization an association for pre-law advising as opposed to an association of advisors. This is one distinction from the existing regional associations of pre-law advisors, or APLAs.
NYAPLAP is also dedicated to helping pre-law students develop skills that will help them in the legal profession. NYAPLAP believes that developing skills important to successful in law school is as important as advising on the admissions process. Its programs will therefore focus on helping students prepare for the front door of the admissions office as well as what to do when the door opens and the study of law begins.
NYAPLAP membership is open to anyone involved in pre-law advising, regardless of their institutional affiliation. Members need not reside or work in the New York City metropolitan area. There is no cost to join. Expenses will be paid from user fees at NYAPLAP events.
